Jack Gantos

We had a very talented children's author visit our school.  He shared his love of books and bookish questions and thinking.  His books illustrate his life that is full of fun and adventure and his stories make us all laugh out loud.  Many of the stories he shared are based on his journal from when he was a child and we found those stories unbelievable!  I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity to learn with Jack Gantos in our classroom.

What did you enjoy most about Jack Gantos visit to our classroom and school?
What did you learn from his visit with us?
Did he inspire you to try something new?  If yes, what did you try?

  1. It was such a privilege to meet Mr. Gantos. Not only is he a great author, but he is a very kind man. He wrote a special dedication to Rex in Rex's personal copy of the Deadend book and also did a super special drawing for Rex's sister, Margaret, on the occasion of her birthday in her Rotten Ralph book. We were so lucky to have a Newbery Award winner visit the school.

    1. Dear Ms. Carmen, Rex's Mom,

We enjoyed reading your comment as a class today! Mr. Gantos was so nice to sign personal copies of Rex's and Margaret's books. He signed copies of books from our classroom too. We agree that we're privileged to be able to spend time learning and getting to know a famous Newberry Award winning author. We especially like his funny stories!

    1. Dear Lily,

I am so glad that you enjoyed Mr. Gantos visit. I believe he inspired many of you to read and write! He entertained us with his funny stories, but he also showed us how we could write like him. I believe you could be a famous author someday. You should keep a journal and your writer's notebook of all your great stories.

Did Jack Gantos inspire you to create anything or read anything?

    1. Dear Helena,

I love the picture of you, Aylee and Mr. Gantos. I think it is so neat that you were so excited to be meeting him that you made a sign that said, "I love Jack Gantos."

Well, I think if you wrote a book that was filled with 16 pages of "Oink, oink!" "Oink, oink, oink!" "OINK!" Then your teacher would even tell you that you had a problem! But it is fun to learn from the experience of someone else and to see that writing is a process that is connected to reading, reading, reading and reading some more!

I hope his visit has inspired you to pick up more books and curl up and read!

I was wondering what exactly you love about him? Do you love his books or the way he teaches through sharing his personal stories or the way he makes you laugh?

      Love,
      Ms. LaQuay

    1. Dear Magda,

Some of the stories based on his real life are pretty incredible to believe. I also really enjoyed reading his books.

I think my favorite book of his was JOEY PIGZA SWALLOWED THE KEY. It was a story about a boy who had ADHD and those stories were incredible! He based most of those stories on real event that he observed too--although it wasn't about his life.

It is so neat when someone can write a story so clearly and with so much detail that you can actually feel like you are the character--reliving the moments with him!

Which of his books was your favorite one and why?
